PMP Exam Cost in 2026: Fees, Membership Math, and the Full Budget

By ExamElephant Research TeamPublished Sep 24, 20264 min read

The real cost of a PMP is five line items: the exam fee, the membership decision, 35 contact hours, prep tools, and — if you need it — a retake. One caveat before any numbers: PMI adjusts fees periodically and pricing varies by country and currency. The figures below reflect PMI's recently published US rates. Verify current fees at pmi.org before you budget.

The full cost at a glance

Line item Typical US cost*
PMI membership (optional) $139 first year ($129 + $10 application fee)
Exam fee — PMI member ~$405–$425
Exam fee — non-member ~$575–$675
35 contact hours $50–$2,500
Practice platform $0 (free tiers) to a few hundred dollars
Retake fee — member ~$275
Retake fee — non-member ~$375
Renewal (every 3 years) ~$60 member / ~$150 non-member

Exam fee: member vs non-member

The exam fee has long sat at $405 for PMI members and $575 for non-members in the US, and PMI has raised prices in recent cycles — which is why you see conflicting numbers across blogs. The fee is the same whether you test at home or at a Pearson VUE center. Regional pricing exists, so candidates outside the US should check their local rate. The only number that matters is the one on pmi.org the day you pay.

The membership math (usually worth it)

First-year PMI membership costs $129 plus a $10 application fee — $139 total. Run the arithmetic with the long-standing US rates:

  • Non-member: ~$575 exam fee
  • Member: $139 membership + ~$405 exam fee = ~$544

At those rates, joining costs less than not joining — and the gap widens if current non-member pricing is higher. On top of the fee difference, membership includes digital access to the PMBOK Guide and other PMI standards, discounted renewal later, and free webinars that earn PDUs after you pass (more in the renewal guide).

If fees have changed since this was written, redo the subtraction with live numbers. Historically it has favored joining; verify before assuming.

Retake fees: the line nobody budgets

Re-examination has historically cost around $275 for members and $375 for non-members — again, verify at pmi.org. PMI doesn't publish pass rates, but well-prepared candidates need a second attempt often enough that pretending otherwise is bad planning. The cheapest retake insurance isn't money — it's refusing to book until your readiness signals say go. If attempt one already went sideways, the retake strategy guide covers the rules and a 30-day rebuild.

Contact hours: $50 or $2,500 for the same requirement

The 35 contact hours are an eligibility requirement, not a quality signal, and the market prices them accordingly:

  • Self-paced online courses: roughly $50–$400. Satisfies the requirement; depth varies wildly.
  • Live or virtual instructor-led bootcamps: roughly $400–$2,500. Worth it if you need structure and a human to ask questions — not because the certificate is worth more.

Both paths produce the same line on your application (requirements here). Choose by learning style and employer budget, not price tag.

Practice: the highest-ROI dollars in the budget

Passing the current exam is mostly a function of working hundreds of situational questions and never repeating a mistake. That second part is where most prep budgets leak — people buy question banks, miss questions, and never see those questions again.

ExamElephant is built around that gap. Every question you miss comes back at 3 and 7 days until you've mastered it, and the bank is aligned to the 2026 ECO that went live July 9, 2026:

  • Free tier: 75 practice questions, no card required (details)
  • Paid passes: coming soon, as one-time purchases rather than subscriptions. Join the waitlist to hear when they open.

Three illustrative budgets

Built on the historical US rates above — swap in current pmi.org figures before committing.

Lean (~$650)

Membership $139 + member exam ~$405 + budget self-paced contact hours ~$79 + free question tier $0.

Typical (~$850)

Membership + exam + mid-range course ~$200 + a paid question bank ~$100.

Cushioned (~$1,250)

Adds longer practice access (~$180) and a ~$275 retake reserve you hopefully never spend.

Many employers reimburse certification costs, including prep — ask before you pay out of pocket.

After you pass: the recurring cost

Certification isn't one-and-done: 60 PDUs and a renewal fee every three years, historically $60 for members and $150 for non-members. Most PDUs can be earned free — the renewal and PDU guide maps the cheap routes.

FAQ

Why do PMP fee numbers differ across websites?

PMI has changed fees over time and prices vary by region. Older articles quote older rates. Treat every number — including these — as a snapshot and confirm at pmi.org.

Do I have to join PMI to take the exam?

No. Membership is optional; it has simply tended to pay for itself through the member exam rate, plus standards access and PDU perks.

Are there fees for rescheduling the exam?

Pearson VUE has charged rescheduling fees close to the appointment date. Check the current policy when you book, and build buffer into your date.

Is doing CAPM first cheaper?

Usually not — it adds its own exam fee and prep time. It makes sense in specific cases covered in PMP vs CAPM.
